The Certified Fibre Characterisation Engineer (CFCE) certification is designed for test engineers who want to apply the full power of multi-purpose test platforms, with their powerful array of measurement capabilities, to carry out full fibre characterisation. This, includes bi-directional OTDR testing, chromatic dispersion, Polarisation Mode Dispersion (PMD) & spectral attenuation measurements.

You will learn to deal with issues such as extended wavelength operation and the impact on testing of systems including ROADMS and Raman amplifiers. You’ll be able to process the results swiftly and efficiently, using test report software, to provide full system documentation. By appreciating all the issues behind the tests you will be able to assess link performance intelligently against application support criteria.

After the course you will be able to:

Explaining the significance of different fibre specifications
Identifying the characteristics of the infrastructure that can impair system performance
Designing and testing programmes to meet customer and operational requirements
Interpreting test specifications
Explaining the purpose of OTDR testing
Analysing OTDR traces and event tables
Explaining what chromatic dispersion is and how and why it is measured
Describing what PMD is and explaining how and why it is measured
Performing full fibre characterisation on a fibre system
Interpreting the results of fibre characterisation and mapping against application support criteria

The CFCE course is for delegates who need to be able to characterise fibre infrastructure professionally, to assess its quality & capacity. It will enable you to recognise why different tests are required and what information they should provide, as well as how to carry them out.

This course assumes that you have some previous training in, or experience of, basic OTDR testing, (such as a fibre installation course or City & Guilds 3668-03) but provides OTDR training as well as CD and PMD training. It suits job roles such as: fibre optic test engineer; fibre optic test technician, optical fibre technical support; fiber optic test analyst; fibre network network project supervisor.

You will complete a practical assignment which will enable you to work through the skills you have obtained during the week. You will work in pairs or small teams to characterise an optical link, complete appropriate documentation and make your own assessment of the link. Depending where you are taking the course the link provided may vary from test boxes, locally set up test rigs, or even sometimes a real link.

You will be assessed on a number of factors:

Carrying out the tests reliably and accurately
Recording the results correctly
Handing over complete electronic test files
Analysing and interpretation of the results and
Reporting on the infrastructure quality and applications support

There is also a short closed book examination designed to ensure that you have mastered the basic important concepts covered on the course.
